What can the craft of writing and performing stand-up comedy teach you about effective communication and public speaking? Quite a lot, as Graeme Watson will show you in this practical workshop based on his hugely popular stand-up comedy workshop that has been hosted at Blick Studios for the past 5 years.  From overcoming the fear of public speaking, connecting to an audience, keeping people’s attention and even enjoying yourself while doing it, stand-up comedy offers some important lessons about how to develop the skills and confidence for public communication.   A writer/performer of comedy for over seven years, Graeme Watson has been a leading light in the development of the Northern Ireland comedy scene since 2007, and is the director of the live comedy development and production project The Infinite Jest, as well as being a co-founder and current chair of the Belfast Comedy Festival. He is currently developing his debut solo show ‘Get Happy’ for the 2017 Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Join us for our for a crash course on how use Crowd-funding to grow your creative business or idea. Ever toyed with the notion of crowd-funding that idea running around in your head. From Kickstarter, to Indigo, to GoFundMe, there are plenty of platforms out there for you to use and many success storied of companies who have grown or even started from successful campaigns. Join us as two local success stories of crowd-funding tell us how they did it. Graphic Designers Paul McNally and Sarah Pannasch, both had successful crowdfunded projects and each will share their experiences. From set up, to promotion, they will share the tricks and secrets that made their campaigns successful.

It’s nearly time for your tax returns (argh!), but don’t panic, we’ve got our in-house expert on hand!

Blick Finance manager, Rosy James, will be offering some simple tips on getting your finances right –in time for the tax deadline at the end of January. Rosy, who has set up the finance systems and managed the accounts of numerous small businesses will be offering some great tips including:

  • Setting up efficient systems for managing your day to day transactions
  • Budgeting income and expenditure
  • Creating cash flow forecasts
  • Doing simple annual accounts for a sole trader
  • Completing and submitting your own tax return as a sole trader
  • Managing employees- payroll and pensions
