Carol Murphy is a writer/director having come from a background of fine art, film theory and film journalism.

 

Originally from Belfast, Murphy studied Fine Art Painting at the University of Northumbria at Newcastle-upon-Tyne. She worked as a visual-artist, completing a two-year fine art residency at the Ateliers ’63 in Amsterdam where she made predominantly video based installation work, and exhibited in Europe.

 

An MA in Film Theory; managing and fronting a pop band, California Roll; publishing an art book The Innocents; film journalism for magazines such as Film Ireland, Flux Magazine, Raindance Magazine, Film Festival magazine, BBC London online and Filmwaves brought her on the road to short film production. Murphy produced the short films Automaton and Tell it to the Fishes, starring Dylan Moran and Gerard McSorley

 

In 2006 Murphy set up the production company Roof Raic. After the 2006 Berlin Talent Campus, Murphy met producer Jennifer Sabbah, based in Paris, and since then they have been developing and co-producing shorts and feature projects.

 

In 2007 Murphy directed her short film Mustard, which premiered at The European Film Festival in Munich. In 2008 her music video, You Make Me Sick, premiered at The 5th London Short Film Festival at the ICA and she also attended the Rutger Hauer Filmfactory where she directed two short films.

 

Murphy has written numerous shorts, including Nightclubbing, which won an RTé/Filmbase Short Film Award and the Ille De France Finishing Fund 2009. Another short, Painkiller, was short listed for Film London’s Pulse Award 2008, the Irish Film Board’s Signature’s scheme 2010 , was chosen to represent Ireland at Euro Connections 2010 at Clermond Ferrand and was shortlisted for the 2010 RTé/Filmbase Short Film Award. Murphy is also developing The Dissenter, Waiting Warrior and Dicky’s Day in Slacker Central.

 

Murphy has completed the first draft of her first feature project. Eugene started development at the Binger Filmlab in Amsterdam 2008/9 and at Script & Pitch at the 2009 Turino Film Lab and was part of EAVE 2009.

 

Murphy is also writing and directing for theatre - Finbar’s Private Netherland was part of the Pop-Up Pick ‘N’ Mix Festival run by The Mac at the Brian Friel Theatre in Belfast in June 2011. She is currently being mentored by Tinderbox Theatre on the third draft of another full length theatre play called i love ya, i love ya, i wanna eat ya  and she is currently writing another full length theatre piece called Journey Woman.

 

Murphy teaches short film screen writing at Queens University Open Learning and on their BA Film Studies degree. She runs a series of specialist film writing classes including Film Journalism and Screen Writers Groups at Blick Studios in Belfast, where she also programmes Creative Industry events. Murphy presents general releases and chairs Talking Movies at Queens Film Theatre and also teaches on their Take Over Festival in Belfast. She is also running two workshops at the Foyle Film Festival 2011 in Derry on script writing and marketing and a taster filmmaking session for Gingerbread NI on their Supermom Film Skills Course.
