Maria Perry's artist statement
The fluctuations between flatness and depth, abstraction and representation, the contrast between light and dark and the process of painting itself all play important roles in my work.
In this current body of work an interest in my homeland of Ireland is evident. All the paintings are of Irish scenes. A source of light within my paintings is significant, the exposure of light on a backdrop of darkness can create almost magical and ethereal images. My aim is to create a sense of illumination and luminosity, which is the essence of these paintings
The history of Belfast in particular has always intrigued me and the building of the Titanic was a significant event in the city’s history. During a visit to the Titanic Drawing Offices in Belfast I was inspired by the architecture of the building and the reflections of light within the main room.
