Top five social media tips for fashion brands
Blick Studios is hosting a Belfast Fashion 2.0 event on March 10, which will look at the influence of online media on the city’s fashion trade as part of Belfast Independent Retail Week.
As a pre-cursor to that, we’re providing some social media tips to get you thinking about some simple ways you can take advantage of online media to boost your business or raise your profile.
1. Use lots of photos
The visual nature of fashion lends itself to photography, so play to these strengths in your social media output. Use Flickr to get photos of your products seen, and post lots of pictures to your Facebook and Twitter accounts. Not every industry has such interesting visual content so readily available to share, so take advantage of this.
2. Encourage check-ins from your customers
If you’ve got retail or showroom space, why not encourage customers and visitors to check-in using Facebook Places, Foursquare or Gowalla. That’s free publicity for you across their social media channels. You could even tie-in a discount for regulars to encourage them to check-in when they visit you.
3. Show your work process
Fashion is, well, fashionable. People are interested in it and people are interested in working in it. Give followers an insight into your work process from start-to-finish. Rough sketches, mood boards and sample fabrics might be part of the daily routine for you, but people will love to get a sneaky look at them.
4. Venture into video
As with photos, video allows you to take advantage of fashion’s visual selling points. Get someone to film you at work, film people trying your clothes on and, if you’re holding any events, make sure there’s a camera there too. Alternatively, position yourself as an expert in the field by delivering your own pieces to camera discussing current hot topics in the industry.
5. Let your passion shine through
Probably the most important tip on the list. Genuine passion for any topic is infectious, so let people get an insight into how important your work is to you. Write blogs, Facebook posts and tweets conveying just what the subject matter means to you.
